Featured Garden: A New Build

Featured Garden New Build

We love a featured garden, and they are really special when it comes to designing a garden for a new build. It is like starting with a blank canvas. New build gardens might see daunting, but to us, they are perfect as we love working closely with the client to design, and build, the garden of their dreams.

Our latest new build garden landscape

One of the main challenges creating a new build garden is that the property is generally overlooked, and privacy can become an issue when you want to enjoy your garden. Our most recent project included hiding unsightly contractor’s fencing on two sides.

Working with the client on his featured garden

We spent time working with the client and created a design. We worked on paper and agreed the most important features and how the garden would look as it matured.

Cost is always a huge element with gardens, especially if you have just moved into a new property. Our client wanted to incorporate a raised walkway, trellises, curves and arches leading through the garden to add interest. To join these together, and to add further interest, we included two quarter circular pergolas, and a new patio was laid from the house opening out onto a level lawn.

Material and planting

Once the featured garden design was complete, we started to think about plants, the soil we had to work with and what we could plant that was fast-growing and could provide quick, colourful results for less budget.

We used 80 square metres of Brazilian slate paving, climbers and mature laurel hedging and planted a selection of shrubs and grasses which would be relatively low maintenance in the future. We added lots of planters and just three flower beds to reduce maintenance.

Creating height in a featured garden

The quarter circle pergolas were planted with roses, jasmine and clematis and the beautiful handmade arbour with three arches was constructed of prepared timber. The idea was to create a green, shady tunnel to link areas of the garden and screen the centre garden from properties on each side.

Privacy screening was included as the garden bordered four different properties which were on higher levels. We took the screening to the same level for consistency, and all within regulations.

Privacy screening was also added adjacent the drive with hanging baskets which the neighbours like so much, we recreated it on their driveway.

Garden inspiration

On one of the walls, we featured 2 bamboo mirrors and staged planters – a real show stopper.
